Story
Sponsor a Roof Tile
The roof is the most important part of any building, and the roof at Jane Austen's House is more important than most. It was under these eaves that Jane sat as she worked at her tiny writing desk, creating her extraordinary characters and crafting her immortal plots.
This roof was last refurbished in 1948, before the House was opened to the public. Now, 70 years on and a million visitors later, it needs major repairs to restore and secure it for the future. We have been supported so far by thousands of Janeites from across the globe, as well as by generous grants from Historic England and Hampshire County Council. Together, we will be able to preserve and restore this special place.
We are inviting you to play a part in the restoration of Jane's roof by sponsoring a roof tile for a donation of just £15 ($20USD, 20EUR), or whatever you can afford.
Each tile sponsored will help us to renovate the historic roof at Jane Austen's House, using reclaimed, handmade clay roof tiles installed by specialist contractors. We also need to ensure these works do not disturb the rare bats that share the site with us, adding another layer of difficulty and expense to this already complicated job.
This is specialist work, involving some 30,000 tiles. We need your help to make it happen, and to preserve safe access to Jane Austen's House for future generations!
