Story
Homes are at the centre of what Riverside does; working to transform lives and revitalise neighbourhoods through building homes, connecting vulnerable people to the appropriate support, and renewing neighbourhoods to ensure everyone has access to good housing.
At Marie Curie, we also appreciate the value of home and the pivotal role that it can play in peoples lives. It is a place where people spend a lot of time, make a lot of memories and often feel most comfortable.
Therefore, it is hardly surprising that many people would choose to die at home rather than in a hospital. In a survey done in 2010, research showed that around two thirds of people would choose to die at home if they had a terminal illness. However, more than half of deaths still happen in hospital, the place people say they would least like to be when they die
According to a national survey, over a third (37%) of people whose relative or loved one died in a hospital did not think they had enough choice about where they died.
At Marie Curie, we are working to ensure that people receive the best support at the end of their life in the location of their choice. Our nurses go to peoples homes and provide care and support for people with terminal illness and their families, giving people the choice to die at home.
Together, Riverside and Marie Curie can help make sure that we can be there for as many people with terminal illness as possible.
As little as £20 can fund an hour of nursing care for someone with terminal illness in their home.
£180 will pay for a Marie Curie nurse to look after someone with a terminal illness for a full nine-hour shift.
£5,500 will cover the cost of Marie Curies entire nursing service across the UK for one hour.
£19,000 will pay for a year of care from a Marie Curie nurse for people with a terminal illness.
Your fundraising will make a real difference. Together we can make sure people have the care and support they need at the end of their life.
