Story
Without education there is no hope, without hope there is no future" - David Rattray
KHULA Education was established in 2007 to honour the memory of David Rattray and continue his legacy of responding to the huge challenges faced by children in accessing a quality education in rural KwaZulu-Natal. KZN is one of South Africa's most marginalised provinces, where more than half of local families regularly have to choose between food and other essentials and unemployment is at 80%.
KHULA is responding through providing direct support in rural government schools where the lack of teaching and resources, combined with large student numbers (which can exceed 90 students to one teacher), continue to create poor learning outcomes.
Despite being a small organisation, we have big impact. Last year, our small team supported over 6,000 children and 200 teachers across 21 rural schools, with programmes including preschool education, top-up teaching in Maths and English, training for government teachers, career and job readiness support for young people and much more.
With KHULA's support, our students consistently excel in their learning journey; for example, our preschool graduates rank in the highest 20% of learners in each year at local primary schools. And, our high school graduates have gone on to study subjects including Medicine and Economics at university, something that would have once been an unthinkable prospect for youth from this region.
