Story
Watford Mencap have been supporting local people with learning disabilities since 1951. We provide services and activities for around 800 people each year, plus their families and carers.
Our main activities are registered care homes, community support, learning & leisure activities, childrens services, advice & information, community café.
A learning disability is a lifelong condition, that affects peoples reduced intellectual ability and how they deal with everyday activities for example household tasks, socialising or managing money.
People with a learning disability tend to take longer to learn and may need support to develop new skills, understand complicated information and interact with other people.
The Rickmansworth Pancake Race has been taking place for around 20 years. We missed last year, but are back with a bang. Its always competitively run, with lots of spectators egging on the teams. The rules are pretty simple a 4-person relay race with runners carrying a pancake in a frying pan. Were very strict that the runners have to flip their pancake at least once, and that they have to finish their relay leg with the pancake still in the pan. There will be four heats, followed by a final race to decide the winner.
The money we raise is vital to help us provide support and services for local people with learning disabilities. These services might be learning workshops, 1:1 advice sessions, childrens play activities or outings.
