Story

Lung cancer is still reeling from the impact of Covid. At the peak of the pandemic, lung cancer referral rates are down 75% and still remain significantly behind expected levels. This ultimately means that thousands of people will miss out on an early, and potentially life-saving, diagnosis. And we know just how important early diagnosis is

Meet Ruthra,

Ruthra was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2019 after suffering from repeat chest infections. Fortunately, it was caught early and Ruthra had surgery to remove the tumour. She is now cancer free and enjoying life with her husband and son.

The pandemic has denied so many people the chance to have a similar experience as Ruthra. This is why we are launching our new awareness campaign; Spot the Difference. Spot the Difference aims to help people spot the subtle differences in their health and take action. Early symptoms of lung cancer are vague and easy to dismiss as something less sinister. Ruthra, herself, put her chest infections down to her son bringing bugs back from nursery. However, after a while, Ruthra realised something wasn't right and asked to be referred to a respiratory specialist. It was a decision that may have saved her life. We want to educate and empower others to do the same.

The Spot the Difference campaign highlights many of the different symptoms of lung cancer including a persistent cough, breathlessness, weight loss, fatigue, hoarseness, repeat chest infections and coughing up blood and then reassures and encourages those with any of these symptoms to contact their GP practice. The campaign also includes a toolkit for GPs to help them spot potential lung cancer patients and refer more quickly for tests. It is through events such as our Retro Run that we are able to run these vital campaigns.

I want to thank everyone who is taking part in the Retro Run and raising money for Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. When I was diagnosed, I turned to Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation and it was such a great help. I got so much benefit from the website and forum. It provides such valuable information and support to people like me at such a confusing and anxious time. I'm now fully recovered and I want to give back so this charity can continue to support those diagnosed with lung cancer and give more people the chance of an earlier and life-saving diagnosis, like me. I cant wait to take on the Retro Runs and raise money for this charity that is so close to my heart. Ruthra.
