A request for Guatemala

Campaign by Bridge of Life

Join Bridge of Life's efforts to strengthen kidney care across Guatemala and beyond. Our plans for 2026 in Guatemala are bold, and with your support, we're not slowing down.

Bridge of Life (BOL), an independent 501(c)(3) public charity founded by DaVita Inc., is an international nonprofit organization working to strengthen health care globally through sustainable programs that prevent and treat chronic disease.

Story

This month, our hearts were forever changed by little Daylin, a two-year-old girl who passed away just days before our volunteer team was scheduled to travel to Guatemala to build her a peritoneal dialysis (PD) room so she could receive care at home with her family.

Losing Daylin was devastating and sobering... a painful reminder of just how urgent this work is. We considered postponing the project altogether, but instead, in her honor and with her family and the center of our hearts, we moved forward with even more purpose. We leaned into prevention, so fewer families never have to experience that kind of loss.

We didn't have much time to organize, and to be honest, we worried about the turnout. But people came...in a big way. Hundreds of community members showed up, and we identified dozens and dozens of people living with hypertension, diabetes, and early signs of CKD, many of whom had no idea they were at risk. We didn't just screen. Alongside our partners, we also provided health education on-site and connected people to the care they need to better manage their disease.

So many of you have seen Bridge of Life's work up close as volunteers: community screenings, PD rooms, fistula surgeries, dialysis training, and capacity building alongside incredible local partners.

Together, these efforts are strengthening kidney care across Guatemala and beyond. And next year, with your support, we're not slowing down.

Our plans for 2026 in Guatemala are bold: supporting Guatemala's Ministry of Health in a nationwide CKD prevention program, building more PD rooms so children can receive care at home with their families, opening the country's first AV fistula hospital, and bringing Guatemalan surgeons to the U.S. for advanced training.
