Story
About Maytree
Operating for over 20 years at its house in north London, the Maytree Respite Centre has offered short-term residential support to individuals who are in the midst of a severe suicidal crisis.
Maytree offers a once-only stay which is free to its service users 'guests.
During a stay, a Maytree guest is cared for and interacts with experienced staff and volunteer "befrienders" who are there to be with and listen to the guests with compassion and without judgement. In its safe, friendly and nurturing environment guests feel relief from isolation through engaging in normal everyday human relationships.
Maytree's service is life-saving and unique.
Closure and Reopening
Regrettably in March 2023, faced with internal management issues Maytree’s service was closed pending review. This was followed by a decision in October to close the service for good.
Strong opposition from Maytree's founders and volunteer community led to this decision being reversed. New Trustees who were committed to Maytree's future and restoring its service were appointed.
Now Maytree is getting ready to reopen again, but before this happens the house needs some refurbishment and redecoration, restoring its welcoming and serene ambience and ensuring that every guests who crosses its threshold enters into a calm, relaxing and homely sanctuary where they can feel contained and supported during their stay.
