Story
Help us to help the millions of adults in the UK who can't read or who struggle to read
The Read Easy vision
Our vision is for all adults in the UK to have the literacy skills they need to realise their potential and live life to the full.
The Read Easy mission
Our mission is to provide adults who want to improve their reading with confidential, free, one-to-one coaching to help them gain the skills they need to live life to the full.
What makes us different
Read Easy is the only organisation in the country which provides a national, volunteer-led, one-to-one reading coaching programme for adults.
What we do
Read Easy provides free, confidential, one-to-one reading coaching to adults in the UK who either can't read or who struggle to read. Our volunteer reading coaches are given full training by Read Easy UK and they provide their coaching to readers through our 29 locally-run, affiliated volunteer groups.
By helping people to improve their reading, Read Easy also helps them to improve their employment opportunities and their ability to support their families. It also, very importantly, enables parents (and grandparents) to read to their children and support their education, thus helping to break the inter-generational cycle of literacy difficulties. Above all, learning to read hugely increases confidence and self-esteem (often improving their mental health in the process) and can enable them to take a much more active part in their communities and society as a whole.
Read Easy recognises that there are many people in our communities who are concerned for those disadvantaged by not being able to read. We also know that many people have the time, energy, skills and enthusiasm to be able to make a difference to these individuals. Read Easy harnesses that local energy and initiative by providing the opportunities and structure for ordinary people to volunteer to help those around them who struggle with reading.
Our work is informed by a commitment to respecting and valuing everyone, whether they are volunteers or those who come to us to improve their reading skills, and to making involvement enjoyable and rewarding for all.
We are seeking fundraisers to help support our work. You can fundraise for Read Easy UK and help more adults improve their reading.
Could you...
hold a coffee morning?
hold a second-hand book sale?
invite a local author to speak at an open event?
organise any other fundraising event that appeals to you?
take part in a local fun-run, marathon or half marathon on behalf of Read Easy?
give up alcohol/shopping/smoking?
or simply donate a few pounds each month to help an adult learn to read?
Whatever you do and whatever you raise, we want it to be fun, but we hope it will also be truly rewarding to know you are opening the door to reading for someone else. Do take a look at the video below about Sarah, who was heartbroken not to be able to read to her twin daughters. Now, after just a year, Sarah is helping them with their homework and encouraging them to experience the joy of reading for themselves.
