Story
Rare Charity offers access to education within tea communities in Malawi. The people working in tea represent some of the most marginalised communities in many of the world's poorest countries. Education enables long-term sustainable social change within an entire community. It also enables social mobility in Malawi as a whole, which holds the world's lowest enrolment for tertiary education, at 0.8%.
In 2019 Rare Charity:
Funded 17 higher educational scholarships (for 9 women and 8 men)
Launched a secondary school scholarship programme for girls
In 2020, we had hoped to double our outreach but, like many small charities, Covid-19 threatens our survival and the futures of our Rare Scholars.
The global COVID-19 crisis will affect communities in different ways. People in the world's most vulnerable countries, where health systems are weak, will be worst hit.
There are almost 20 million people in Malawi, but only 600 registered doctors
Malawi has fewer than 20 ventilators available to treat patients
Lower respiratory disorders are already the third highest cause of death among Malawians
Rare Charity believes that young people are the key to solving Malawi's many challenges, including Covid-19. Rare Scholars are becoming qualified in the disciplines that they know their country needs. Many have chosen medical fields. Some are now volunteering at their local clinics. You can meet our incredible scholars, and see how Rare Graduates are already transforming their communities.
It is critical that we continue to support Rare Scholars in their pursuit of education in this time of uncertainty. We desperately need your support as we continue to honour our commitments to our scholars. Covid-19 will be catastrophic for Malawi, but a single healthcare worker or administrator can make an inestimable difference - not only in this crisis, but in the unimaginable wake the pandemic will leave behind.
Rare Charity has helped me in ways I never expected. Graduates can ensure that this area is filled with people who are not always dependent on others. This can be a community filled with educated people who are ready to develop their area for themselves.
