Story
In an era where the boundaries of global health challenges are constantly expanding, the threat of dengue is encroaching on regions once thought safe, including parts of Europe and North America. This evolving health landscape is vividly symbolised by a group of dedicated Mums and Dads, taking part in an iconic challenge called The Speed Project, a 550km ultra-relay race from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Their journey echoes our collective race against time to address the escalating reach of dengue.
The World Mosquito Program is sitting at the forefront of this challenge - using our Wolbachia method to fight dengue, Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever. By introducing this natural bacteria into mosquitoes, we significantly reduce the transmission of diseases, presenting a long-lasting and safe solution to the growing dengue challenge.
Dengue once localised to specific regions, now threatens over half of the world's population. Current trends suggest an alarming growth, with the potential to affect an additional two billion people by 2080. This rapid spread highlights the urgent need for global awareness and action.
As our runners traverse the diverse landscapes from the bustling streets of Los Angeles to the harsh terrains of Death Valley and the Mojave Desert, their relentless spirit reflects our commitment to combating dengue's spread. This race is more than a physical endeavour; it's synonymous with our dedication to halting the advance of dengue into new territories.
Your support is vital in this journey. Every contribution empowers us to move closer to a future where the threat of dengue in emerging regions is effectively combated. We thank you for standing with us and the entire team of Mosquito Milers in this crucial race against the expanding reach of dengue.
