Story
At the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, we examine dead birds of prey sent in by the public in order to monitor and reduce chemical risks in the environment, and protect our vulnerable species.
The work we do through the Predatory Bird Monitoring Scheme not only helps birds of prey. The fates of these beautiful creatures alert us to environmental contamination more broadly, benefiting all wildlife.
A selection of the birds received undergo further analysis to check for contamination in tissues e.g. barn owl livers are often analysed for rodenticide concentrations.
We present the evidence and insights we gather to regulators and industry, so they can design products, regulations and stewardship schemes in a way that balances the needs of nature, food production and pest control.
We are the only monitoring programme of this kind in the UK, and we need your help to support this unique scheme. Any donation, however small, will be appreciated. Here is an indication what we can do with your help:
A £10 donation will cover the cost of postage and packing for one dead bird of prey.
A £20 donation will cover the cost of four packs for submitting dead birds of prey.
A £30 donation will cover the cost of the items we need to store tissue from ten dead birds.
A £50 donation will cover the cost of examining one dead bird of prey.
A £100 donation will cover the cost of scientist travelling to a school or wildlife event to engage the public with our work.
