Muslims are tremendously overrepresented in the UK prison population. There are currently 13,563 Muslim prisoners in England and Wales. In London 17% of the Prison population is Muslim. Sadly these numbers continuously increase yearly.
As part of our community reform program, this Ramadan As-Subah Outreach aims to help Muslim prisoners in UK to cope and feel less isolated by helping to provide essential Islamic material.
We have witnessed Ramadan and community support help them in coping with prison life, displaying less aggression and developing self-discipline through prayer, meditation and recitation of the Qur'an.
We have been in contact with several prisons in the UK and have seen there is a need for prayer mats, Qurans and other religious items.
