Story
BGF broke ground on Pozo Azul Phase 2 in November of 2021, after completing the first classroom building in Pozo Azul in mid-2019. We're thrilled to continue construction at this campus with Phase 2, the second school building, under the direction of field manager Sebastian Martinez and volunteer project manager Mike Rabinowitz.
The second building will ultimately house two classrooms and will include expanding the existing community garden and making it a teaching garden. Already, this garden is producing a variety of beautiful produce for the benefit of the community. Phases 3 and 4 of the campus project will include a kitchen, auditorium, teacher housing, health clinic, and more classroom space.
As of this year, the school has 51 students enrolled and there is already a growing waitlist of students. When completed, this second school building will allow the school to double the number of students enrolled, and has a target completion date of mid-2022.
Students in this region currently do not have the opportunity to further their education after middle school. When finished, the Pozo Azul School Campus will serve 150 students annually, offering secondary education as well as vocational training, with two labs for training in woodworking, cooking, and beekeeping.
This fundraising campaign will offset travel expenses for volunteers who travel to Guatemala to work on the Pozo Azul school project. Volunteers help make this project come to life. Pozo Azul is more than just a school -- it's a place that will create educational opportunities for generations to come, supporting BGFs core value of building projects that are generative and enduring.
