Millions of people in Turkey live far below the basic standards of living and experience hunger and severe poverty. Income inequality in Turkey is one of the worst among OECD countries and KONDA research suggests 29% of households are unable to access vital needs of life. The COVID pandemic that is now underway for more than a year has significantly worsened the situation with countless families struggling to get regular access to food and basic necessities.
Given the urgency of the need to address the current poverty, Turkey Mozaik Foundation has decided to support the Mobile Food Bank initiative within the Cemre Fund.
Cemre Fund was founded within our partner organisation Sivil Toplum için Destek Vakfi (STDV, Support Foundation for Civil Society) against this backdrop with a feeling of responsibility and an objective to alleviate deep poverty in Turkey. Since late 2020, Cemre Fund has been supporting Derin Yoksulluk Agi (DYA, Deep Poverty Network) Temel Ihtiyaç Dernegi (TIDER, Basic Needs Association) and Tarlabasi Toplum Merkezi (TTM, Tarlabasi Community Center). With their support, TIDER has been adding another 13,500 people to their already existing food bank network, DYA is providing support to an additional 2,000 families and TTM have started to map civil society and public organisations supporting the struggle against poverty to bridge the gap between existing services and people in need.
As a fourth project, Cemre Fund is now starting to support Mobile Food Bank. This project is a joint initiative launched by TIDER and DYA in Istanbul, first of its kind in Turkey, aiming to provide food and vital basic needs to families in need that have struggled to bring in any income due to the pandemic, who also have not been able to get any social support.
With TIDER's expertise in food banks and DYA's experience in working with most vulnerable communities, the first milestone is to reach at least 300 families directly and provide food and cleaning supplies on a monthly basis starting in June 2021. Additionally, with the support of social workers, these families will be connected to already existing (local) government and civil society support systems.
The total targeted budget of this project is 603,000 TL and only 167 TL (approximately GBP 16) will provide a family not only with their monthly food and basic needs but also social support to help them break the cycle of deep poverty. Please note the project allows for 170TL to meet the monthly basic needs of one family, which would ordinarily cost more with normal purchasing and distribution. This is thanks to the economies of scale achieved with the supply chain efficiencies of this project and the more effective management of donations received by TIDER and DYA. Any financial support raised towards this target will be a tremendous help to support the fight against severe poverty in Turkey. We trust you will find it within you to join us with your support to help deliver some urgently-needed relief to extremely poor families in these most difficult times.
Since its launch in October 2017, with your valuable and continuous support Turkey Mozaik Foundation has provided more than GBP 500,000 in grants to civil society organisations in Turkey.
