Women, men and children caught in heavy fighting and continuous airstrikes have been forced to flee their homes with only the possessions they can carry. Countless families have been torn apart and lives destroyed.
Now refugees are facing an uncertain future, surviving in sub-zero temperatures without basic amenities. There is an urgent need for food, water, shelter and medical assistance. UNHCR is responsible for protecting people worldwide who are forced to flee their homes because of war, conflict or persecution. In Ukraine, UNHCR is leading and coordinating the humanitarian response to help refugees. UNHCR teams are also working at the border in Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Moldova and Belarus. UNICEF, the United Nations Childrens Fund, works to build a better world for children everywhere, raising funds for worldwide emergency and development work. In Ukraine UNICEF is working tirelessly to provide displaced families with safe spaces and health and sanitation facilities, as well as lifesaving supplies of clean water and food. UN World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian organization, saving lives in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters and the impact of climate change. Under the Patronage of Nelson Mandela, Laureus leverages the power of global sport to combat violence and discrimination towards the young. Laureus is providing food, shelter, medical and educational supplies for children and mothers in transit, as well as facilitating longer-term recovery and rehabilitation programmes. Donations of £250k+ raised for the Red Cross via a Go Fund Me appeal launched by Sheva (https://www.gofundme.com/f/sheva4ukraine) at the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, have been included in the overall total of the PYP for Ukraine campaign by agreement with the 5 program charities.
