Story
The YMCA of Greater Boston is a cornerstone for our community. Every day, the Y makes a positive, lasting impact on children, families and seniors.
When our city needed an organization that could partner with others to support people in real-time, through a real, global pandemic crisis, the Y stepped in to provide help and hope, and we are not done!
Our Purpose is Caring for Others
Social Connection - Making sure everyone has someone to turn to for help - The Y connects people, now that many of us are connecting virtually, the Y has doubled down on efforts to make access to health and wellness available from anywhere at any time.
Food Insecurity - Making sure everyone has access to nutritious food - In 2020, the Y provided 3.3 million meals to families and individuals across Greater Boston. As the pandemic continues, we anticipate a greater need for hunger prevention work.
Learning Loss - Making sure our kids don't lose momentum in learning - So many of our children are currently learning remotely. We have yet to determine the overall cost to learning that this pandemic will cause, but our goal is to support children and families through this time to prevent learning loss. To that end, we have opened 26 Community Learning Centers where children are guided through their daily assignments, gain much-needed social interaction and physical activity.
Movement - Making a more equitable, healthy community for all - So many of us have had our daily habits upended in the past year. Whether we exercise at home or take part in safe activities at the Y. Daily movement has a huge impact on our bodies and our minds. The Y is working to provide opportunities so that everyone, everywhere can stay active despite staying apart.
We welcome people into our YMCA family without regard for the color of their skin. We create safe spaces for citizens to be in community together, both virtual and in our facilities. We support families to ensure that everyone has the chance to learn, grow and thrive. We work to ensure that families have enough healthy food. We support our communities to ensure that they remain healthy, in mind, body and spirit. The Y strengthens people, families and communities. For a better us.
