Story
Hi Im Oscar, I am a 3 year old from Bedford.
I am my parents IVF dream come true. They were so excited to watch me grow, tracking perfectly on every chart and scale, kicking mummies ribs and bladder. At birth I suffered a Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) event, and was down for 7 minutes while they resuscitated me. Shortly after I had a seizure and had to receive cooling therapy at a nearby specialist NICU. No one could understand how this textbook pregnancy had resulted in such a poorly little boy.
At 7 days old I had an MRI which showed the extent of the damage to my brain. Mummy and daddy finally asked am I going to live? Something they had all been so afraid to ask. They said I would, but would likely face physical and learning challenges.
Mummy named me after a warrior. Because I am determined to do everything that everyone else is doing. I fought to come off a ventilator, then a feeding tube and all I want be is independent.
Days before the national lockdown, I was diagnosed with quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Everything stopped and we were left not knowing what to do next.
I want to be independent, to walk on Oscars own my words. I now need help to get an operation that could change my life, and make this dream come true. This would follow an intensive rehabilitation programme lasting at-least 18 months.
We would like to adapt the house to make it more open plan and accessible for me to move around and create a space for me to complete my daily physiotherapy after the surgery.
The NHS has been amazing, but they are so stretched and I need to support and extra sessions that just arent possible through them. So, we are trying to find alternative and extra therapies to support my strength.
Everyone who meets me, say how determined and cheeky I am. I just want to do what everyone else can.
