Story

Since 2004, the Mitchell Memorial Cancer Center has been a beacon of hope for those touched by cancer. Owensboro Health Foundation's 2024 Super Hero Walk raises much-needed funds to assist cancer patients and their families.

Since its inception, Owensboro Health Foundation has supported numerous Owensboro Health projects impacting the lives of the people in our region, including patients and families impacted by cancer. The Foundation proudly promotes “the joy of easing the burden of a cancer diagnosis” as one of ten key funding priorities, and currently funds the following cancer-related initiatives:

• Assistance Funds for breast cancer patients who cannot afford specialty bras, lymphedema sleeves, and/or medicines needed for controlling or relieving symptoms;

• Capturing the Moment, an annual tradition that helps support, nourish and empower cancer patients on their emotional journey by providing a professional photography session for patients and their loved ones in a nurturing and joyful environment as a way to “capture a moment” of their strength, courage and fight;

• The Lung Cancer Screening Project which provides free lung cancer screenings for early detection of cancer for those who qualify for participation in a long-term study;

• Mammograms for Life, a program that provides free breast health services (including screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, MRIs and pathology) to medically underserved women;

• A Medication Fund which provides financial assistance to cancer patients who cannot afford the medicines needed for controlling or relieving symptoms;

• New Patient Welcome Kits that provide educational information and needed supplies for newly-diagnosed cancer patients to assist in the transition to cancer care;

• Multiple Support Groups that offer a combination of coping and sharing, health and wellness, education, and creative and complementary therapies for cancer survivors and anyone in our service area affected by a cancer diagnosis;

• A Patient Resource Room that offers a variety of personal care items for patients in need;

• Credible Mind, a free, online platform featuring over 10,000 expert-vetted resources (articles, podcasts, apps, videos, and more) that delivers consumer-friendly evidence-based help on over 200 topics and approaches, such as anxiety, depression, parenting, working from home, and relationships;

• Nicotine Replacement Therapy Assistance for patients who would like to stop smoking but have financial barriers to obtaining needed supplemental support;

• Survivor Events to empower, support and celebrate cancer survivors and their families including Winter Wonderland, Garden Therapy, Capturing the Moment and Harvest of Hope Fall Festival; and

• Transportation and/or Lodging Assistance for patients travelling significant distance from their home to Mitchell Memorial Cancer Center for treatment. A variety of options are available dependent upon need and location of origin.

The Mitchell Memorial Cancer Center is able to provide comprehensive cancer care close to home because of the support of our community. Your participation in the 2024 Super Hero Walk is so appreciated!
