Story
1 in 4 students experience mental health problems while at university, with the suicide rate amongst students now higher than in the general population. In the 2017/18 academic year, over 2000 Northumbria University students accessed the University's mental health and counselling service. In addition to this number, students also access support via their GP and the Students Union. To help support these students, Northumbria University is funding and launching a new exercise referral programme, with clear evidence showing the links between physical activity and improved mental health. The Northumbria Sport Foundation is aiming engage Northumbria University students, staff, alumni and partners to raise an additional £10,000 to contribute to the the development of the NU Thinking project through a series of Adventure challenges.
