During the COVID-19 shelter-in-place order, women like Melinda* are often faced with multiple life-threatening decisions while being at risk for domestic and other violence. The crisis has meant countless women are dealing with intimate partners using the quarantine as a reason to enforce more control over them and imposing a dangerous silence.
In Melinda's case, it was impossible to call an advocate because her husband was monitoring her every move. The focus on survival during COVID-19 has created unprecedented barriers for women reaching out and getting the help they need.
Fearful of the coronavirus, survivors are faced with yet another risk, catching the virus or leaving their abuser. The pandemic's full toll may not emerge for months, leading advocates to say there will be a dramatic spike in those reaching out for services.
