North East Seal Triage (NEST) unit

Can you help us raise £10,000 towards the construction of BDMLR’s first seal triage unit in North East England? With an ever increasing number of casualties this new facility will enable us to treat growing numbers of young seals in need of help.

Story

Many seals within the north east of England face uncertain futures due to the lack of rehabilitation and short-term care facilities available. The purpose of the North East Seal Triage (NEST) unit would be to provide an immediate assessment and treatment facility which, alongside the support of the professional veterinary team at Robson & Prescott, will allow us to determine whether it is then possible to transport seals for ongoing care and rehabilitation.

While in the NEST Unit, BDMLR trained Marine Mammal Medics will care for the seals. This will enable them to provide the seals with a clean and quiet space in which full assessments can be carried out and any treatments and medications required can be administered. The seals will be able to rest and, in some cases will stay for as many days as is needed, to ensure that the correct decisions are made for the welfare of each animal.
