"Service is the rent we pay for being. It is the very purpose of life and not something you do in your spare time.” –Marian Wright Edelman, Founder, Children’s Defense Fund
The notion of stepping outside of self in service to others has been a guiding principle in my life since my earliest memories. Not in a patronizing, “savior of the downtrodden,” way but one in full recognition and appreciation that as members of this global community, it is incumbent upon each of us to find ways to leave it a little better than the way we found it.
It was with me in First grade when mama encouraged me to “be kind to everyone” when I didn’t understand why kids laughed at a classmate because of his clothes. It was there in college when I stood in the face of opposition at the formation of an organization to support and celebrate students of the Black experience. It has carried me through my career as a legal aid attorney—fiercely advocating for our most under-supported neighbors—and as law school administrator—coaching, connecting, and empowering the next generation of lawyers. It now leads me in the celebration of my 40th birthday!
I need YOUR help! During the month of September, I have committed to celebrating all things 40 by:
1. Engaging in 40 hours of pro bono or community service
2. Collecting 40 books for Read and Feed; and
3. Raising 40 donations for Legal Aid of North Carolina through the Wake County Bar Awards, an annual fundraiser benefiting LANC with 100% of funds going to the organization
How will YOU help?
1. Let me know of community services events in the Triangle.
