Mr Musa Amos Chua, a teacher participating in this programme at the LEA Primary School, Jahi Express, said, ‘Teaching Character Education, I see it as a civic duty as well as a calling, to effect changes and transformation in society.’ Another teacher, Mrs Bilikisu Abubaker, at LEA Primary School added ‘I have a very big motivation. I see teaching character education in schools as a way that I can help my nation.’
A pupil, Ekenete Ejiomo Edolo, added that the aspect of character education that she found most useful in her life was loving her parents and siblings, giving to the needy and respecting her teachers.
Universal Peace Federation (UPF) UK is helping UPF Nigeria that has been promoting a project to teach Character Education in all schools of Nigeria, with many other stakeholders, and under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Education.
We are pleased to announce that we plan to have our teacher training workshop for twenty pilot schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Nigeria from 21 – 31 August 2023. This training is organized in collaboration with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Universal Basic Education Board (FCT[1]UBEB) and under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Education (FME).
The training will be based on the new curriculum that we have developed for primary school levels 4 and 5, which deals with the following topics:
1. Introduction to Character Education
2. Religion and World Scriptures
3. What it means to be Good
4. Conscience and the Golden Rule
5. Filial love and Sibling love in the family
6. Honesty and Self-Control
7. Patriotism and Public Service
8. Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding
The above is contained in a Teacher’s Manual and a Student Workbook which have been tailored to the Nigerian socio-cultural environment and scope of perception of teachers and children respectively. Evaluation instruments have also been developed for an objective and empirical pre- and post-program impact assessment.
We worked hard over the last several months to develop these materials under the guidance of the National Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).
While schools in the FCT are currently on holidays, it is important to use this time to run the training so that the teaching of Character Education may commence in those pilot schools by the first week of September when schools resume.
