Story
Nicky Spinks is one of Climbers Against Cancer’s Athlete Ambassadors. She is an inspirational British long-distance runner, who has set women's records for the major fell-running challenges the Ramsay Round, the Paddy Buckley Round and the Bob Graham Round. She went on to create history by becoming the first person ever to run doubles of each of these three Classic Rounds (involving 100+ miles and ascending twice the height of Everest!). Remarkably, her greatest ultra-running feats have been achieved since her successful battle with breast cancer. Both are documented in the inspiring film, “Run Forever: The film of Nicky Spinks and The Double Bob Graham.”
October is the Global Awareness Month for Breast Cancer, and Climbers Against Cancer are collaborating with Breast Cancer UK to raise awareness of the vital part that exercise can play in preventing this disease. Breast Cancer affects over 2.2 million people worldwide each year, and over 50,000 in the UK alone, being the most prevalent form of cancer in UK, and it is estimated that at least 30% of these cases could be prevented through lifestyle changes. Nicky will be taking part in BCUK's 30 Day Challenge to help inspire people to get a little exercise each day. Don’t worry – you don’t need to be a world-class ultra-distance runner to benefit from taking a little more exercise. Nicky plans to mix in some gardening, horse-riding and hiking in amongst her routine of running and gym work. Something for everyone!
As well as raising awareness for the 30 Day Challenge, CAC will also be raising funds to help specific research to deliver BCUK’s objectives. Climbers Against Cancer is running a campaign whereby the proceeds from every item of pink CAC merchandise we sell will go to BCUK, and we’ve committed to donate at least £5,000. Check out our shop or donate on this page to boost this total even further.
