Story
Amaudo was established in 1989 to help those who were homeless and facing mental health challenges. At Amaudo we offer a safe haven; a place for them to heal and be treated with care and dignity, to be helped to face a positive future, rehabilitated, trained in transferable skills to give them the opportunity to provide for themselves and if possible, reunited with their families and communities.
Every day Amaudo staff travel out to some of the remotest areas of Abia State and beyond. They work alongside local communities and medical facilities to promote mental health awareness and deliver services to thousands of people experiencing mental health challenges, as well as liaising with government departments.
The main centre vehicle is over 8 years old and has suffered greatly travelling on the poor roads (dirt tracks!) around Amaudo and across Abia State. The costs of maintaining the vehicle are now extremely high and it's unreliability is preventing us from delivering our life changing services. A new vehicle is essential for Amaudo and will enable us to provide vital mental health support to over 50,000 people in highly inaccessible, rural locations over the next five years. This will allow us to continue transforming lives and increasing community understanding of mental health into the future.
The cost of a new vehicle is in excess of N26,000,000 which is close to £50,000! By part-exchanging the current vehicle and applying for different grants we have achieved three quarters of our target, but we still have some way to go.
We are aiming to raise £12,500 for the balance of the vehicle but we need your help.
_____________
Amaudo Itumbauzo was founded in 1989 by Rosalind Colwill in response to growing numbers of mentally ill people roaming the streets of south east Nigeria. A combination of negative cultural beliefs and a lack of information and resources mean that these most vulnerable people are often left with nowhere to go.
Amaudo provides residential and community-based services as well as challenging stigma and discrimination. We work with local communities to raise awareness of mental health issues and challenge the government to ensure basic human rights.
Amaudo UK was established as a UK charity in 2000 to support the work of Amaudo Itumbauzo in Nigeria.
