When Newcastle started its research into cancer 40 years ago, mortality from the disease was at a peak in the UK. Since then, cancer survival rates have doubled in part because of the efforts of people at Newcastle.

But cancer still accounts for a quarter of all deaths in the UK, and peoples lives are still being cut short because we have work to do. 1 in 2 people in the UK will receive a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime.

In the past 40 years, we have

- Discovered PARP inhibitors, a new type of cancer drug which is revolutionising the types of treatment doctors can offer to people with cancer

- Found new ways to classify blood and brain cancers in children, leading to a more accurate diagnosis with a better chance of successful treatment

- Designed a device which has helped to significantly improve detection of colorectal cancers and is routinely used in the NHS
