Story

While LGBTQIA2S+ youth make up 7% of the total non-adult population in the U.S., they represent 40% of all youth experiencing homelessness today. In fact, LGBTQIA2S+ youth are 120% more likely to experience homelessness than the general population. The data for our LGBTQIA2S+ youth from communities of color show even greater challenges and disproportionate hardship.

Family conflict is the most common cause of all youth homelessness. For our LLGBTQIA2S+ youth, the conflict tends to be over their sexual orientation or gender identity. Other driving forces include poverty, domestic abuse, and aging out of the foster care system.

In response, New Avenues proudly offers programs and resources to address the unique barriers and challenges facing our LGBTQIA2S+ youth. This includes the Sexual & Gender Minority Youth Resource Center (SMYRC) as well as integrated, culturally-specific case management services. Regardless of the specific need, New Avenues is committed to providing safe, harassment-free spaces and relationships for these young people to be their best selves.

The New Avenues Ambassador Board is celebrating Portland Pride this year by raising critical resources and awareness for our LGBTQIA2S+ youth. Together we can help create a better future for all Portlanders.

How your contributions can make a difference.

$25: could provide an hour of positive activities at SMYRC, a welcoming place that empowers and supports the LGBTQ2IA+ community.

$50: can give one young person access to access to 2 hours of counseling and case management services.

$75: could provide 3 isolation care packages, including food and other essential items.

$100: could feed 40 young people in our Drop-In Center where they have access to a variety of critical services including meals, showers, laundry, relationship, and a safe space.

$250: could provide more than 2 months of emergency rides for young people involved in sex trafficking.

$500: could house a youth for one week in our supportive Transitional Housing Program.
