Put up a nest box at Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory

Money raised in this campaign will be used to buy a range of nest boxes to be put up around the Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory recording area. We are especially hoping to buy Woodstone boxes which help prevent Woodpeckers predating our nest boxes.

Story

At Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory we monitor and maintain over 100 nest boxes providing valuable data to the Nest Record Scheme which studies the breeding success of our British birds.

Each year, as well as putting up new nest boxes, we have to replace a lot of our old boxes when rotten or when damaged by Woodpeckers, which are able to drill into the wooden nest boxes to predate the chicks inside.

Money raised in this campaign will be put towards buying nest boxes, which will be put up by Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory Trust, and towards repairing/replacing our damaged nest boxes.

In particular we are hoping to invest in Woodstone nest boxes which are made using a mixture of wood and concrete.

Not only will the birds using this type of nest box be safe from Woodpeckers, but these nest boxes will continue to provide a home for wildlife for over 25 years (they come with a ten year guarantee)!

With £22 we can buy a woodstone nest box for birds like Blue Tits, Great Tits and Robins.

With £28 we can buy a woodstone nest box suitable for Starlings.

With £30 we can buy a larger wooden nest box for species like Stock Doves and Little Owls.

With £38 we can buy a wooden triple nest box for House Sparrows.

With £70 we can buy a wooden nest box for Kestrels.

With £3 we can buy a protective metal plate to make it harder for Woodpeckers to break into our existing wooden nest boxes.

Thank you for your support and for helping to provide a home for a family of birds at Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory.
