Story
SHIM's mission is to mobilize community resources and implement sustainable programs that compassionately help neighbors meet basic needs, achieve self-sufficiency, and build community. The vision is to create an inclusive community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. With your help, SHIM can feed families, nurture children and empower neighbors.
For more than 50 years, SHIM has adapted to meet changing community needs, providing critical services to South Hills residents. As suburban poverty grows at a rate five times faster than urban poverty, there is more work to do. SHIM is seeing an increased demand for food pantries, clothing, school supplies, and utility assistance. Neighbors need educational and financial support as well as family and community resources, especially now as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
SHIM is uniquely positioned to address each client's needs with the broad network of services offered. Often an individual or family coming to the pantry for the first time will be referred to other SHIM services, such as financial and utility assistance or educational resources for children in the family. SHIM invites clients to meet with service coordinators to develop individual plans for self-sufficiency.
Children and youth are especially vulnerable to the effects of poverty, as breaking the cycle of poverty relies greatly on access to educational resources. SHIMs Youth Programs provide essential enrichment and intervention in children and youths' lives that establish healthy habits related to studying, exercising, eating well, and forming a strong community.
You can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors.
By providing essential services and comprehensive strategies for each individual and family, SHIM is strengthening the South Hills community by empowering residents to thrive.
