Story
Mutlu Kaya is a survivor, who has suffered tremendously but has not given up. Despite everything she has been through, she refuses to be silenced and continues to inspire others by finding new ways to connect with them, and with her song, she encourages women to resist.
There are many more women like Mutlu in Turkey and around the world.
The number of femicides has been increasing every year. According to the We Will Stop Femicides Platform, in 2022, at least 334 women were killed by men. More than half of the killers were the womens husbands or boyfriends.
Gender inequality has taken root in every aspect of life. Turkey ranked 124th among 146 countries in the World Economic Forum's 2022 Global Gender Gap Index. 42% of women between the ages 15-29 are neither in education nor employed, compared to 17% of men. While the employment rate for men is 59%, only 26% of women are in employment. 6.5% of women over the age of 25 are illiterate, whereas this rate is 1% for men. Turkey ranked 129th among 190 countries based on the ratio of women deputies in parliament, with only 17% of the members of parliament being women.
Although the statistics are grim, we know that women in Turkey are fighting against gender inequality relentlessly. To take an active role in this struggle, we launched our Gender Equality Fund in 2019 to support civil society initiatives that promote womens rights and gender equality in Turkey through new and innovative projects, campaigns and advocacy activities and institutional development of womens and LGBTI+ organisations. So far, we have supported 12 organisations which are combating gender-based violence and femicides, providing legal and psychosocial counselling to women and LGBTI+s subjected to violence, and ensuring their equal access to rights and opportunities.
As Turkey Mozaik Foundation, we are proud to be part of the journey of My Name is Happy. The film's producer, award winning documentary filmmaker Nick Read, and co-director Ayse Toprak approached us in 2020 and shared their wish to collaborate with a UK based charity that shared the film's passion to fight gender inequality and violence against women of Turkey. We have since worked in close collaboration with the filmmakers and are proud to be the preferred charity to further grow this beautiful film's impact. All funds donated on this page will go towards our Gender Equality Fund and help women like Mutlu.
Inspired by Mutlu's resilience, we proudly stand in solidarity with the women and girls of Turkey by supporting the charities working tirelessly against gender inequality and all forms of violence against women.
Mutlu means happy in Turkish.
Support our cause with your donations, and let the women sing happy songs!
