Coronavirus Appeal: The clock is ticking on Yemen
The UN has warned that the clock is ticking on the Coronavirus threat in Yemen. With the country having registered its first official case, Yemen is gearing itself up to fight this devastating pandemic, but unfortunately the country has limited resources that allow for detection, isolation and treatment of the disease.
With no isolation facilities except 30 beds in Sana'a and tests for only 200 people, healthcare workers are severely under resourced and furthermore, lack training in managing patients who present with symptoms of COVID-19.
More than five years of conflict has deepened Yemen's poverty, devastated its infrastructure, and caused widespread hunger and suffering and this disease is a second front that Yemen is unprepared for.
As a result of this, there is a lack of awareness and capacity in the community on prevention and isolation of the disease, with experts warning that COVID-19 in Yemen could spread faster, more widely and with deadlier consequences than in many other countries .
Saving Lives in Yemen
Islamic Relief is on the ground now and working to help fight COVID-19. We have already begun responding by providing:
1) Food assistance and grants for orphaned children
2) Hygiene kits including gloves, masks, toilet rolls, disinfectants and hand sanitisers
3) Awareness-raising leaflets on how to keep safe.
But we desperately need your support to continue saving lives by supplying urgent resources for testing, quarantine and isolation, training and personal protection equipment for healthcare workers and food packs for communities suffering from shortages due to war and disease.
