Story
Like many charities and businesses, we've been hit hard by the current economic climate. So, we've reviewed and had to make the difficult decision to close our centre in Southville. However, we're as committed as ever to continue providing low-cost, specialist music therapy… but we need your help to do so!
Help us raise £50,000 of unrestricted funds and enable us over the next 2 years to continue to provide more music therapy for more people in more places.
Please help MusicSpace be the difference, to people like K:
K (age 3) has Complex Lumbosacral Lipomyelomelingocele, the most severe form of Spina Bifida. She also has congenital vertical talus, ankle & hip dysplasia and other secondary complications. She has spent most of her life in and out of hospitals, undergoing complex medical procedures and rehabilitation interventions.
K’s difficulties have had a significant impact on her and her family’s lives and she struggled with anxiety in new settings and meeting people. When she first came to MusicSpace, K was very reserved, apprehensive and reluctant to engage with peers or professionals. Due to her Spina Bifida she also has left sided weakness. It was hoped music therapy could build her confidence in new places and also support the development of movement in her left side.
Over the course of her music therapy sessions K has developed from not wanting to leave her parents side or playing with any instruments, to a confident child running around the therapy room, climbing on drums and engaging fully with her therapist. Although she has found using her left leg frustrating at times, the music has motivated her to use it for kicking games and much more. She has developed her communication skills and confidence.
It has been wonderful to see K with the support of her family, using the sessions to find her voice. She is starting pre-school next term and has been able to go to hospital appointments with m
ore confidence and playfulness, something her parents didn’t think could be stress-free until now.
K’s mum says: “Music Therapy Sessions for K have been an absolute lifeline”
Music Therapy has the potential to make a difference, and for many of our clients it is the thing that makes THE difference.
