Thank you for visiting our Campaign Page!
Our plans are exciting and ambitious. But the outcomes for our inpatients, their carers, families and friends are life changing.
Callington Road Hospital is our inpatient setting, currently undergoing construction and improvement work. With several wards, we have a specialised Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and rehabilitation wards. There are around 125 beds for our patients and service users.
The hospital is the safe place for many patients who have serious mental illness. We provide a holistic approach to recovery, addressing both mental and physical well being. Inpatient settings enhance the overall quality of life.
However, with our statutory funding stretched to the maximum, we are now fundraising so that we can install a Multi Use Games Area at Callington Road Hospital.
Sports and outdoor activity is critical. Regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and adequate sleep can alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions.
Preventing and managing chronic physical conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity, is crucial for improving overall health and reducing the risk of complications. And addressing physical health needs empowers patients, enhancing their self-esteem and sense of control. By integrating comprehensive physical healthcare into the treatment plan, inpatient units can optimise patient recovery, improve quality of life, and reduce the likelihood of rehospitalisation.
Spending time in nature has been shown to have a profound impact on mental health. For individuals in inpatient settings, access to outdoor spaces can provide a much-needed respite from the confined environment and offer opportunities for relaxation, exercise, and connection with the natural world.
We have a wonderful space behind Larch Ward, which is great for outdoor activities. But at the moment, its just grass and concrete area and not so conducive to physical activity of any kind.
We want to install a Multi Use Games Area for our inpatients, carers and even for our staff teams, significantly enhancing the local environment and encouraging physical activity, team engagement, interaction and socialization.
With a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), the outdoor activities we can offer, include:
Football
Basketball
Netball
Tennis
Badminton
Pickball
Cricket
Bowls
Skittles
Walking hockey
Volleyball
The outdoor space will also facilitate boot camp, circuit trainings, Tai Chi, Yoga, aerobics or exercise to music, to name a few.
To do this we need to raise at least £20,000.
If we are going to truly transform both our approach to physical and mental care, and the lives of our service users - we need to raise the money ourselves and ask you to support us on the journey.
We are going to approach grant funders too, hoping they can support our appeal.
If you, your colleagues or your team, friends or family would like to help, here's how.
You can donate here. There is a 'Give Now' link at the top of this page.
Or you can set up your own fundraiser or event, and help raise money as a team.
Please help if you can. Every pound raised will go into the MUGA which will help improve outcomes significantly.
Research tells us that Service Users are less likely to be readmitted to a Mental Health Hospital if they are engaging in indoor / outdoor physical activities following their discharge from hospital. This combined approach promotes a sense of accomplishment, independence, and a smoother transition back into the community for many patients.
