Story
Each year exhibitions of museum quality are showcased at Southwark Cathedral. These rotating exhibitions - which are all free to the public - have become a much-anticipated part of the Cathedral's cultural calendar, and are intended to give people new access points to the Cathedral.
We are fundraising for new exhibition display cases to help tell the story of mudlarking, in addition to the history of Southwark Cathedral, the local history of the area and the social history of London. Our previous exhibition display cases (over 25 years old) weren't built for this purpose and were not accessible for children or wheelchair users.
Education and engagement will be at the heart of these displays - starting with a display of finds found on the River Thames foreshore by mudlarks and archaeologists. We are also planning displays on pilgrimage, the history of local ceramic pothouses, and the impact of throwaway plastic on the ecology of the River Thames and our seas and oceans.
The previous display cases needed to be replaced before they became unusable. For the Cathedral to host mudlarking exhibitions (plus other exhibitions), we have replaced the previous display cases with new fit-for-purpose cases, which are secure and easily accessible by staff and curators.
Please help to raise the money for the brand new display cases which ensure that we are able to host these exhibitions and more (Southwark Cathedral receives no funding from the government, and very little funding from other sources for its ambitious and innovative programmes).
Thank you.
