Tanzania- teacher training in Maasai multilingual education

Now we have some materials ready for use and in the printing process, we need to support the teachers in how to use them. We will provide this training in the village schools in two main locations: Longido and Ololosokwan, close to Serengeti.

Activities undertaken by the International Network for Development reflect the charity's objective to advance education and relieve poverty anywhere in the world. Current projects focus on developing mother tongue based multilingual education.

Story

In 2024, after a visit to a Maasai school, run by Mulika Afrika, it was discovered that the children who come to school only speaking Maasai, were forced to learn in a language the didn’t know, KiSwahili and English.

We discussed the way children learn best, and showed how much easier it was for children to learn concepts and to read and write in their own language. We then began to make plans to develop a curriculum in Maa, as a foundation to developing a multilingual education programme.

After several workshops with local teachers and other members of the community, we now have some early learning materials in their own language and based in their culture, which are in the process of being printed. The photos in the gallery clearly demonstrate this important aspect of education.

We now need to support the teachers in developing an activity based multilingual curriculum using these new materials as a foundation for learning concepts and other languages. To do this we need to raise funds to support the training workshops. Funding will cover running the workshops including; teachers attendance, accomodation and travel.
