Story
We are delighted that Stephen Lloyd MP has made WRAS his Christmas appeal this year. we're aiming to buy 10 hedgehog houses and the bedding that needs to go with them, to enable us to overwinter the many poorly hedgehogs that come in to WRAS.
Every year over 100 hedgehogs that are too small to hibernate come into care at WRAS. They spend time indoors with our orphan team gaining weight. Once they are a good weight they then go into outdoor pens, where these hog house are used, and they are overwintered. Our carers monitor their weight throughout the winter and the hogs can sleep through the winter knowing they are being well looked after.
Once the weather warms up in the spring they are then all released to where they came from. juveniles are soft released at locations of known hedgehog populations and we use the hog houses as a safe haven whilst they find their own home!
Thank you to Stephen for choosing us this year!
