Story
1 in 200 people in the UK carry a faulty mitochondrial gene that could lead to serious mitochondrial disease. Let's find a cure.
The Wellcome Centre for Mitochondrial Research (WCMR) is based within the Medical School of Newcastle University. A huge breadth of research is undertaken within our Centre to address questions regarding mitochondrial disease and dysfunction. With your support, we can transform the promise of scientific advances into revolutionary treatments that restore mitochondrial health for the benefit of those living with a range of different medical conditions.
Support Us in Finding a Cure
The biomedical discovery team at the WCMR investigate the causes of mitochondrial dysfunction and how mistakes within the cells of the body can lead to a range of debilitating symptoms that can affect any one at any age.
Since mitochondria perform so many critical functions, mitochondrial dysfunction is the root cause of hundreds of other symptoms and diseases, including blindness, epilepsy, dementia, cancer and strokes.
Despite the seriousness of mitochondrial disease and the crucial role its research plays in treating many other conditions, low awareness means that some people go undiagnosed, living without treatment and risk unknowingly passing it onto their children.
Your support will empower our research and help us transform the lives of those living with mitochondrial disease and other conditions linked with mitochondrial dysfunction. Without mitochondrial research, there will never be hope for a cure. Let's find one together.
