On January 15, 2009, a city still healing from the aftermath of 9/11 watched in awe as US Airways Flight 1549 descended over lower Manhattan and — after declaring an emergency — miraculously landed on the Hudson River. Thanks to the extraordinary skill of Captain C.B. “Sully” Sullenberger, First Officer Jeff Skiles, first responders, and the crew, all 155 passengers on board survived.
This remarkable feat that fateful day changed the lives of so many people — from the passengers, their families and friends, to the nation that witnessed the Miracle on the Hudson. This single act brought hope to New York City. A tragedy averted...a Miracle instead.
As we now approach the Miracle on the Hudson’s 15th anniversary this January 15, 2024, in a world in need of lessons in being calm in a crisis, we honor those who made this miracle possible, and mark the telling moment for those who were transformed by the experience.
With Hudson River Park, we’d like to designate a bench along the Hudson with a plaque honoring the people at the heart of this important moment in our city's history. Your contributions will honor Sully and crew, the passengers, all the brave first responders— the helicopter pilots, the coast guard and fire departments, the police department, paramedics, tour boat captains who changed their routes . . . and the ordinary citizens who provided comfort to strangers in need. The location of the bench will overlook the stretch of the Hudson where the plane found safety. This will be a place for all New Yorkers to celebrate hope, inspiration, and second chances.
Please donate today to make this bench a reality. We hope to reach our goal before December 1, 2023.
