Story
I have stammered for as long as I can recall.
After a couple of bouts of speech therapy on the NHS in both my pre-teen and later in my early-teen years, I felt like I was making steady progress, but ultimately fell through due to my personal lack of engagement. I continue to use some of the techniques I learnt but have adapted them to create my own solution. This process of trial and error has been possible due to being fortunate with the support of family, friends, teachers and sports coaches.
I have been engaging more with Stamma over the past 2 years. I went to the Manchester Stammering Support Group, volunteered at the first STUC conference, and attended the Northern Stammahouse conference. I also ran the Manchester 10km to raise money for Stamma.
Through these events and experiences, I met a network of amazing people and I have learnt a lot about other peoples experiences of stammering and how they manage their stammer in their own unique way.
After International Stammering Awareness Day, I felt like I wanted to give more back and to try find my own way to get Stammas message more into the mainstream and dismiss the stigmas around stammering. This is where the idea of the marathon came from. That's why on Sunday 6th June, I will be taking on The Most Scenic Marathon in Britain organised by Lakeland Trails and taking place in Coniston to raise money for Stamma. Please give generously!
