Why Mellon Educate
As a housing charity we provided permanent quality homes for 125,000 of South Africa's township residents. This led the US Congress to describe us as the most efficient housing charity in Africa when passing a Bill to recommend us for USAID.
In 2013, we shifted our focus to education on the advice of Nelson Mandela who was a personal friend to the charity founder, Niall Mellon. In just 5 years, we have partnered with 28 schools, bringing educational improvements to over 30,000 learners.
We couldn't do any of this without our volunteers who fundraise tirelessly throughout the year and come and lend a hand in South Africa on one of our 2 annual trips:
We have a team of educational specialists in South Africa, who were all educated in South Africa and have worked in education or social services in South Africa for their adult lives. They know exactly the type of challenges facing teachers in the townships and implement programmes that positively impact on the entire school value chain: learner assistance, educator training, school management and leadership development, curriculum support, parent and community participation.
Mellon Educate have initiated several successful community development programmes; breakfast clubs to ensure that all of our learners start the day with a hot meal, a Walking Bus to enable our learners to travel to and from school safely and Adult Literacy Programmes to empower parents to help their children with homework and assist in school are just a few examples.
In addition to this, we strive to improve the infrastructure of schools and increase the resources available to teachers and learners in the townships. Just £50 can provide a school with a tablet computer which brings a wealth of educational content to hundreds fo learners as well as online courses and support to teachers. A donation of £100 can provide one of our learners with all of the uniform and stationery needed for a year.
South Africa ranked 75th out of 76 countries in a league table of education systems drawn up in 2015 by the OECD. At Mellon Educate, we work tirelessly to improve access to and the quality of education in South Africa's schools. To give something truly meaningful for Christmas this year, please donate.
