Our History
Alhamdulillah the Forest Gate Masjid started back in 1992, and since then it has been serving the local ummah with great eagerness and sincerity. Our elders started what is known today as Forest Gate Masjid and Imam Zakariya Academy.
Originally it started with one property, 451 Romford Road. The needs of the community grew, and property number 449 Romford Rd was for sale. The committee, with the help of the community brought that property and soon both the property were utilised for Salaah and daily worship. Later, 447 Romford Rd also came on to the market and that was also purchased. In 2012 property 445 Romford Rd was also purchased. The masjid committee has been trying hard to attain planning permission for many years, and there has been some uphill struggle many times.
In 2015 the masjid committee appointed a new architect. With the extreme hard work of the committee and the professional know how of the architect the council granted planning permission to build a new purpose-built masjid. The planning permission was given on the evening of Tuesday 15th January 2019. The project requires the existing building be demolished. We must all remember all the Musallis (worshippers) united and co-operated throughout the planning process. All our Musallis supplicated to Allah (swt) our Rabb accepted our supplication, through the sheer mercy of Allah we have the planning permission.
Narrated on the Authority of Umar bin Al-Khattab (May Allah be pleased with him):"I heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) say: 'Whoever builds a masjid (mosque) in which the Name of Allah is mentioned, Allah will build a house for him in Paradise.'" (Ibn Majah)
