Story

In 1968, the Music Department could no longer justify the cost of a Marching Band. With the support of the college administration, a student-operated band known as the “Marching Lumberjacks” was conceived. The band is an energetic group that astounds crowds with its wacky marching style and extensive selection of music. They entertain crowds all over the West Coast and beyond with their zany antics and fun-loving nature.

The Marching Lumberjacks have entertained Cal Poly Humboldt's students, staff, faculty, and surrounding community for over 55 years. The band provides its elected officers with leadership roles, real-life work experiences, and organizational skills. All Humboldt students are invited to become members. The band provides a place where all students are welcome regardless of their musical ability. The Marching Lumberjacks have taught many to play instruments, and the group is credited with providing stress relief through musical expression and self-expression.

To keep the music alive, donations to the Marching Lumberjacks go directly toward instrument repairs, purchasing new instruments, and travel costs. Proper instrument upkeep is critical, as maintenance issues can lead to broken or out-of-tune instruments. Your support also helps the band travel to parades across California, such as the Fort Bragg Labor Day Parade and the San Francisco St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Now, the Marching Lumberjacks are preparing for an exciting milestone—returning to the Pasadena Doo-Dah Parade for the first time in over a decade! This beloved, free-spirited tradition is the perfect stage for Cal Poly Humboldt’s one-of-a-kind band, bringing school spirit and Humboldt pride to audiences all along the California coast.

Help make this historic trip possible! Your support will ensure the Marching Lumberjacks can represent Cal Poly Humboldt at the Pasadena Doo-Dah Parade and continue bringing music, energy, and tradition to nearby communities. Donate today and keep the music playing!
