The Manta - Landless people of Bangladesh

Organised by Muslim Charity

The Manta people live on the banks of Patwakali, Bangladesh. They have been landless for over 3 generations without education, sanitation, and shelter. Their lives are intertwined with their small boats and they call the open river their home.

Story

The Manta

The Manta are an invisible community that live on the banks of Pakwakali, Bangladesh. They lost their land and homes to river erosion and climate change nearly a hundred years ago.

Since then they have drifted on the river and making the open waters their homes.

They have no access to education, sanitation, or shelter. Their hopes, dreams, and aspirations are all connected to the small boats.

Children have no choice but to accompany their parents on the open waters sometimes for 10-12 hours a day. They help with fishing, cooking, selling all from their boats. When its time to sleep they huddle under the boat with the elders of the family sleeping on the outside.

Muslim Charity with your help wants to build a boat school for these wonderful children. This boat will follow their families to the open rivers and enable the parents to give their children a chance to learn and with time enable them to realise their dreams and aspirations.

With your help we hope to work with the community to try and transition the community onto land so further services can be provided such as shelter, sanitation and education.

100% of your donations will be used for this project to support the Manta community to build a boat school.
