Story
Davy Craft was born with a rare neurologic disorder that has caused a variety of impairments and a severe, medication-resistant form of epilepsy. Davys family, the Womelsdorf Community, along with The IM ABLE Foundation, are on a mission to raise funds to build an inclusive splash pad at the Womelsdorf Pool.
This outdoor play area will include sprinklers, fountains, and other structures that Davy and all who join him can use to cool off in the summer months.
With your generous donation, we can create this inclusive and adaptive addition to Berks County for those who cannot or choose not to swim, regardless of their ability.
Davy was born on September 14, 2011. There were no complications with delivery but within a few short months he began missing key developmental milestones. When he was just 9 months old, his parents: Dave, a teacher and former US Army Captain with 2 tours in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan, and Amanda, a registered nurse, met with a neurologist to discuss Davys MRI results. A large portion of Davys brain simply had not developed. Other parts failed to develop in the correct spots. You can imagine how the whole family was devastated and grasping for answers. It wouldnt be until almost 2 years later that they would finally find out that the brain abnormalities were the result of a genetic disorder called Baraitser-Winter Syndrome (BWS).
At that time there were only 50 known cases worldwide and very little was known.
Over time as Davy grew, he continued to miss more milestones. He only started walking when he was 4 and never learned to speak other than a few simple words. BWS also caused visual and hearing impairments, severe developmental delay, cerebral palsy, and seizures. In 2019 Davys seizures progressed and became uncontrolled. Further testing showed that he had developed Lennox Gastaut Syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy often resistant to many antiseizure medications. Davy is currently on several medications and has an implanted medical device called a vagus nerve stimulator yet his seizures remain uncontrolled. He continues to have multiple seizures of different types throughout each and every day.
Despite all that hes been through in his short life, Davy is happy and loves to play and giggle. He is always asking others to come and taps his hand on his chest in his gesture for them to come play with him. He is so social and thrives when others join him in his love of water, trains, and buses. He has shown so many people the true meaning of strength, resilience, and unconditional love.
Thank you for helping us make history and bring joy to this little boy, those who love him, and others like Davy in our community for years to come!
