Story
Maitland Hospital is a major regional paediatric centre, providing inpatient and outpatient services to the Upper and Lower Hunter Region. Each year the 16 bed childrens ward admits around 1700 patients. The Special Care Nursery supports maternity units in the Upper and Lower Hunter, as well as supporting the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at John Hunter Children's Hospital as a Level 2 service. The Special Care Nursery admits approximately 180-200 babies per year.
The hospital provides day stay surgery for specialties such as ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat), surgical and orthopaedic procedures. Medical services provided at Maitland include treatment for illnesses such as asthma, bronchiolitis, croup, appendicitis and injuries including limb fractures, wound infections and osteomyelitis.
Outpatient services are provided for follow up care following admission to hospital and are provided by the hospitals six staff specialist paediatricians.
Community support allows Maitland Hospital to purchase equipment and refurbish rooms, which supports staff and makes the stay for the children and families of the Upper Hunter a little easier.
