Story
Maggies, like many charities has faced the wide-ranging challenges that the Coronavirus pandemic has brought.
Following the national lockdown announcement back in March 2020, our centre here at the Victoria Hospital was handed over to NHS Fife in order to provide a staff hub. The hub was staffed by the NHS Psychology department and was open 7 days per week, with 5800 visits in the 3 -month period it was in use.
During this time, our skilled programme team were still on hand to offer support to people with cancer and their families, in order to help them through an increasingly traumatic time. Many people suffered with increased anxiety because of the effects of social isolation, concerns about treatment, or money worries. Unable to see people face to face, as we normally would, we continued our support on the phone, through email and via Zoom - even running our groups and courses online too.
Since returning to the centre at the end of June 2020, our doors have been open, and we have been able to welcome visitors once more. In all, we have supported over 9,000 people throughout the pandemic and expect to secure in excess of £3M in benefits for those in need of financial assistance.
Everything that we provide at Maggies is completely free, and we raise the funds we need to do this through the kindness of the many individuals and organisations who fundraise to support our work.
