“I arrived in the UK alone in October 2022. With no money or anyone to turn to, I felt trapped in a situation that mirrored a Sudanese open prison. I couldn’t work (no right to work), or study for the first six months. Then, I found a beacon of hope in BRR. They offered me a chance to volunteer as an asylum guide. They trained me, provided resources, and empowered me. This experience transformed my life. My English improved dramatically, I connected with my community, and finally felt free. After I received refugee status, BRR again supported me, this time by supporting me to apply for a paid job at BRR to utilise my skills. Today, I’m a confident person with a network of friends and colleagues. I can support myself and my family. I’m eternally grateful to BRR for the life-changing opportunity they gave me.” - Ezzeldin Ali
When they first come to us, most asylum seekers and refugees don’t know what a real welcome feels like in this country, with hostile systems to navigate. Bristol Refugee Rights exists to wrap holistic support around them, starting in our Welcome Centre.
We offer a hot meal, information, orientation, hair cuts, social activities and copious cups of tea! This vital resource is used by more than 100 asylum seekers a week.
We know Bristol has a strong community of support. During the riots back in August, one of the Bristol hotels we work in was attacked, terrifying the people living there. But Bristol residents protected it! While the rioters threw bricks and bottles, counter protesters blocked the doors and formed a protective ring around the building. Their numbers far outweighed the attackers.
Has the violence gone away? The threat of hate crimes for just walking down the street hangs heavy and so does the impact on those affected; the fear, anxiety and trauma still there every day for the asylum seekers and refugees we support.
We are working to help asylum seekers and refugees rebuild their confidence and hope, and we need you beside us
Together, we can shape a stronger, more resilient community, one that reflects who we really are in Bristol and one that delivers collective healing for all those still terrified by what they saw.
