The purpose of Sadaqatul fitr (Fitrana) is purification of the fasts of Ramadhan from any shortcomings.
One of the aims of sadaqatul fitr is to ensure the poor rejoice on the day of Eid. It is therefore recommended to discharge early so that it can be delivered before Eid.
The specific calculations are based on commodities and volumes mentioned in Ahaadeeth.
