Story

Ahoy!

Welcome to The Literacy Pirates' Giving Tuesday Now campaign page!

The Literacy Pirates is an educational charity that develops the literacy, confidence and perseverance of children living in Hackney and Tottenham, so that they can achieve both in school and in the world beyond.

We are currently not running sessions at our learning centres due to the Covid-19 crisis. We look forward to returning soon but in the meantime, we remain committed to supporting our Young Pirates while they are at home.

Our wonderful Education team launched a new *Virtual Ship* at the start of April, giving the children we support the chance to keep developing their reading and writing with activities and support from our Session Leaders. Our Young Pirates have come onboard and have been busy reading and writing at home, sending us their work for feedback and sharing their personal book reviews!

We are also planning for when we reopen. It is certain that our work will be needed more than ever when schools open again.

What you can do:

GIVE - Donate right here on our JustGiving Giving Tuesday Now campaign page, to make a donation towards our Virtual Ship and Learning Programme . We are aiming to raise £2,000 by 5 May 2020, the official #GivingTuesdayNow date.

Every donation helps support our Young Pirates and we are very grateful for your support! Please share the campaign on social media and help us reach our target by spreading the word.

WRITE - We're inviting you to write your own entry and contribute towards our 'Diary of an Extraordinary Spring', (which you can find on our website) an incredible historical record of the time. Share with us by email or on social media. We'd love to hear your stories.

SHARE - Encourage the Young Pirates by re-posting their work on our social media over the next two weeks. Share our 'Diary of an Extraordinary Spring' with any budding young writers you know. Share a message of support with our Young Pirates and we'll pass it on. Email crew@literacypirates.org and let them know how well they're doing.

What will we do to thank you for supporting our work during this time?

Our Education team has been working hard to create brilliant resources for our Young Pirates to use while they are at home. Now, we want to share some of these resources so that lots of other children can benefit from them too. We will be sharing:

- Our special 'Diary of an Extraordinary Spring' for children. Children can fill in a diary to record this unusual time. It will ensure they continue to practice their writing while at home, and definitely be a piece of history to look back on!

- Video guidance from our Education team for parents/carers who want to support children during this time

- Top writing tips!

We will be releasing these via our social media channels during our fundraising period. Be sure to check in for our new releases and share these with anyone who may need them!

How your donation will be used:

Our Education team have worked really hard to quickly transform a venue-based Learning Programme to an online Virtual Ship, to ensure that the children we work with continue to be supported remotely in their learning while at home.

This Virtual Ship includes:

Weekly Writing Challenges, resulting in an e-book published online.

A diary sent in the post called Diary of an Extraordinary Spring, an exciting weekly writing project to create an incredible historical record. Open to all!

Reading Adventures, encouraging Young Pirates to read for 30 mins a day and submit book reviews.

#ProudToBeReading taking a photo when a child (or you!) is reading and sharing on social media, as a simple way to encourage reading for pleasure.

All your donations will go towards this programme, allowing us to support the 285 children we currently work with to continue developing their literacy, confidence and perseverance.

Why is our work needed?

We work with children who are falling behind in school and exhibiting low levels of confidence and perseverance, due to circumstances beyond their control. Many of the children we work with come to us with reading skills that are two years or more behind where they are expected to be.

Our aim is to break this cycle and ensure that every child experiences success in their learning, regardless of their circumstances, by providing an impactful Learning Programme. We partner with local schools who refer the children they feel will most benefit from the Learning Programme.

With us, the children receive the rare opportunity of one-to-one support with their reading and writing, to increase literacy skills, as well as working towards tangible publishing projects, providing opportunities for the development of confidence and perseverance. By doing this, we can significantly change these young peoples academic experience and performance, and transform their life-choices and ability to reach their potential as adults.

Although we can't currently support our Young Pirates at our Hackney and Haringey Ships, we are determined to keep supporting the children in our 2019/20 Learning Programme during the Covid-19 pandemic. With your help, we can continue to provide an impactful Learning Programme that will develop their literacy, confidence and perseverance.

Thank you for taking the time to donate and for supporting our work.
