Story
Ahoy!
Welcome to The Literacy Pirates Giving Tuesday campaign page!
The Literacy Pirates is an educational charity that develops the literacy, confidence and perseverance of children living in Hackney and Tottenham, so that they can achieve both in school and in the world beyond. We do this by providing extra adult attention and reading support from a different volunteer each week, and the chance to work on exciting real-world publishing projects. All of this takes place inside our fantastical learning spaces, which have both been designed throughout to resemble a pirate ship. The organisation is led and staffed by experienced teachers, who are supported by a community of over 600 trained volunteers.
As a charity, we are constantly fundraising to keep our work going. Last year, our fantastic supporters helped us to raise over £2,000 towards launching our second Ship, The Haringey Pirates. A year on from this brilliant achievement, we are proud to say that we are now running our Learning Programme in two London boroughs, working with over 285 young people.
So whats next? Doubling the amount of money we can raise during this Giving Tuesday campaign!
Donate, then nominate a mate!
Were asking you to help us double the amount of money that we raise during this campaign, by donating to our Giving Tuesday campaign, and then nominating someone else to match your donation!
What you can do-
Donate right here on our JustGiving Giving Tuesday campaign page.
Once youve donated nominate a mate! Ask a friend or family member to match your donation or donate an amount of their own. This way, your donation is doubled, without you spending any more money!
Then, once your friend has donated, get them to nominate someone else to match their donation!
It couldnt be simpler, and it will make an incredible difference to the 285 children we will be working with this year.
How your donation will be used:
This year we are running the year-long Learning Programme across two London boroughs for the first time.
The children enrolled on the programme attend once a week for an academic year. They work one-on-one or in small groups with a different volunteer each week. Across the year they will develop and publish three creative products, a book, a film and an app. This helps the children to develop their reading and writing, as well as giving them the confidence and perseverance skills to put all of this into action.
£5 could go towards a new book for our libraries Every session, children read one-to-one or in small groups with a volunteer as part of our targeted reading support.
£25 could go towards a childs weekly learning session in our fantastical learning space.
£100 could go towards our exciting film project making film stars out of our child writers, all of whom will feature in a film which will be premiered at a local cinema.
£500 could go towards a teachers salary- running our sessions and motivating the children we support.
Why is our work needed?
Children that are already behind with their reading, at the age of seven, have a one in five chance of going on to achieve a C in English at GCSE. In contrast, one-third of better-off pupils who have fallen behind at seven go on to achieve at least a grade C (Teach First 2017 Impossible? A social mobility report). We work with children who are falling behind in school and exhibiting low levels of confidence and perseverance, due to circumstances beyond their control. Many of the children we work with come to us with reading skills that are two years or more behind where they are expected to be.
Our aim is to break this cycle and ensure that every child experiences success in their learning, regardless of their circumstances, by providing an impactful Learning Programme in both our Hackney and Haringey Ships. We partner with local schools who refer the children they feel will most benefit from the Learning Programme.
Here, the children receive the rare opportunity of one-to-one support with their reading and writing, to increase literacy skills, as well as working towards tangible publishing projects, providing opportunities for the development of confidence and perseverance. By doing this, we can significantly change these young peoples academic experience and performance, and transform their life-choices and ability to reach their potential as adults.
Thank you for taking the time to donate and for supporting our work.
